A dog is part of the family, so it's okay to only use positive reinforcement. This article will describe some dog training tips that will help you in your efforts. Make sure that you do your research before you begin to train your chihuahua so that you understand how the training works.

It is best to train your chihuahua without unintentionally affirming his undesirable behaviors and mistakes. Never give your dog any treats or special attention for doing bad things. For example, do not pet your dog gently when they leap on you if you want them to stop the behavior.

Consistency is key in crate training a puppy. If you remove the pup from the crate, see to it that he has the means to go potty. As he gets older, he will gain greater control of his bodily functions, making it easier to control himself.

Although it's sometimes difficult to be patient with your dog, it's important that you try to be as patient as possible. Your dog is not human and doesn't know English. Your dog will not understand if you fly off the handle. Therefore, make sure you stay calm, and if you discover that you're too heated during a session, then take a break.

For extra help as you train your chihuahua, consider obedience classes. It is helpful to have an obedience instructor to help with problems that are specific to your dog.

Training sessions should be kept short. Any longer than fifteen minutes spent training your dog will exhaust his ability to concentrate and lead to frustration. Following every session, allocate some playtime and give the dog lots of praise.

If you want to train your chihuahua, avoid playing any sort of control games like tug of war. In addition to tug-of-war, games that involve wresting something away from your puppy or chasing each other in any respect, can entice the animal to bite or nip at your hands. These bad behaviors will be hard to get rid of and are counter intuitive to your training efforts so save them for after the dog has learned clear, well established guidelines on how to act.

You should always praise your dog for his good behavior while you are training him. Positive reinforcements include treats, smiles and pats on the head. Do not give any rewards for negative behavior since your dog will thing the bad behavior is good as well.

Consistency is key when housebreaking your dog. When you start housebreaking a puppy, you will want to take it outside as often as possible. When he does use the bathroom outdoors, give him lots of praise. Never yell at your dog for relieving itself in the house. He does not understand what he did and your yelling will not teach him anything. When it has an accident, take it out and show it where it should go.

Consider the size of your dog when purchasing a bed. You can give your dog a bed that is sized appropriately, or consider an unconventional bed for your dog, such as a crib mattress. A crib mattress is convenient because you can use a fitted crib sheet as a cover, which can be changed very easily and as frequently as you desire. Crib mattresses are also waterproof!

If you are training more than one dog, remember that some breeds of dogs can be trained together, but some breeds cannot. If you notice a lack of concentration during training, you may have to separate them out, and try to return to training them together later.

If you catch your puppy chewing on things, stop him. This teaches your puppy what is acceptable to chew, making it less likely that he will chew your belongings when you are not able to watch him closely.

Consistency is key in the process of training your pets. This means remaining consistent with the words for your dog's commands, your tone of voice, and the provided rewards.

When dogs bite, it is usually from fear. When a dog feel threatened, scared or trapped, it may bite. Force is not necessary to train a dog, and should never be used. Your dog might snap and bite you. This builds trust in the dog, and he will see you as his faithful master.

Many times people expect that training their puppy will be much more difficult and stressful that it actually is. If you just stay consistent it is easy to train your chihuahua.
