On observing the market trends with respect to upwards demand for talent in specific sectors, it is evident that in the last ten years there has been is colossal surge in the demand for highly skilled business and management professionals. This rise is no longer limited to the traditional business operations such as corporate houses and management consultancies. The growth of the requirement for skilled management and business professionals has become visibly importance even in the most technical and niche of establishments, such as government undertakings, ports, engineering consultancies, law firms and many more. Summarily it is needless to say that the need for this specific type of professionals may be observed and marked in an enormous variety of sectors.
And of course, it stands to reason that wherever there is a need and a demand, there will be an immediate opportunism and desire in individuals, be it of the freshly graduated undergraduates variety who want to further their chances in the competitive world by qualifying into a meaning competitive management and business graduate study, or of the young professionals variety who aspire to further expand their ability in their areas of academic and technical expertise or even the working professionals who are well versed with the industry with their experience aplenty looking to gain a dynamic edge with a change of pace in their careers; all seek to find a means to tap into this fertile demand.
As an immediate consequence, the world has seen the education marked being taken over by business and management schools which have thus become much sought after to fulfil this demand for skilled business and management professionals. Through the various requirements by the admissions departments globally, a part of their admissions process includes perusal and judgement of the candidate’s GMAT score, as GMAT has been the most frequently relied upon admissions test for business and management grad schools. It is no longer contested a fact that GMAT has been and continues to be the most common qualifying criterion test taken to gain admission into management schools and business schools alike. In fact, the depth of reliance placed on this test can be seen from the sheer number of countries that have standardised test centres administering it; the number stands at a staggering surplus of a hundred (100) countries.
The GMAT test contain four distinct components, each of which tests different kinds of skills and aptitude. Certain components require application of multiple skills at once. The components are the Analytical Writing Assessment or “AWA” (essay section), Integrated Reasoning (reasoning section), Quantitative Section (Math section) and Verbal Section (includes reading comprehension, critical reasoning and sentence correction). They test the attempting candidate’s skills at being able to discriminate and choose, recognition and identification of predictable patterns, thinking quickly and critically, constructing essay content in a well-structured and well-thought out form, amongst and horde of other skills and general and specific aptitude.
Therefore, operating under the assumption that having mathematics as a forte in terms of expertise will not be of much use as it only occupies one component of the GMAT test. This essentially comes to mean that no single component can be prioritized over the other and having strengths in one will not overshadow lack of aptitude in the other. All of the components are equally important making the GMAT test the sum of all its parts and each part is critical and influential in determining the scores one can get or wants to achieve; meaning that success of an applicant of a graduate business school’s acceptance is keenly proportional to the GMAT score they are rewarded. What is interesting about the GMAT, being one of the greatest misconceptions surrounding it that has been debunked is that it does not attempt to gauge a student’s intelligence. What is meant by this is not that one need not apply themselves intelligence-wise, but rather the reward of a high GMAT score is not garnered in equivalence of one’s own intelligence alone and that a student should not pre-empt their failure on the suspicion that it is constructed to fish out drastically high IQ candidates. Also interestingly enough it in fact requires no knowledge of neither business studies nor management studies.
However, what the abovementioned does intend to illuminate and strongly emphasize is that anyone who is considering taking the GMAT test seriously, to sincerely get into a management grad school of their choice, must necessarily put a serious emphasis to receiving and taking the correct kind of coaching. Coaching is nouvelle form of academic and examination preparatory aid in India, taking it by the storm for the ease of follow through it provides in terms of assistance and guidance to already overburdened Indian students. The right form of coaching can be the most obvious factor by and large to distinguish between test takers who cool headed and confident on their D-day and test takers, who whilst might have been praised all their lives for their high intelligence but end up sorely incompetent when writing the exam – most often due to the lack of familiarization which can come through naturally from receiving the appropriate kind of coaching. As a matter of fact, research indicates that ninety seven percent (97%) of students who took the GMAT test attributed their sense of comfort and familiarity with the pattern and line of questions in their papers to having received the correct coaching (the pool of students who took the test were taking it in India).
The usefulness and importance of coaching has not only been fervently supported by test takers but also by various business and management graduate schools, including some of the best in the world like Hult Business School, which is one those few belonging to the elite category, choosing their students with the highest standards of merit, also testify that while coaching is naturally helpful in preparing for the actual exam, it is also incredibly beneficial for candidates who are enrolled in approaching their studies strategically as the skills and aptitude gained and sharpened tend to assist them in collecting, grasping and utilising the knowledge appropriately. The coaching they receive of course trains them for the GMAT test but also manages to give them the necessary direction which proves to be fruitful in their studies as well. Hence, it is crucial to take a disciplined approach towards it.
Often the difference between the correct type of coaching and the type that is not very suitable can be judged in essence by its mentors. A good mentor coaches by speaking to the candidate with perspective and clarity and a bad mentor can be found often talking at the classing instead of with them. With the sufficient amount of correct coaching, the applicant will find that each component of the GMAT test has a unique passkey to resolve its seemingly enigmatic code. To put it forward in absolutely simple terms, one merely has to understand that the GMAT is created, set and designed in such a curious manner so as to bring out the capability of the test taker to correctly identify the purpose of each component. Once the purpose is identified by the applicant, recognizing the theme behind it will be far simpler. The correct coaching will help the individual sharpen such aptitudes so that finally, they can practically apply themselves by easily recognizing the specific types of patterns evident in the questions.
Therefore, having the ability to resolve the context and solve the questions correctly does not require an Olympian IQ but rather a dedicated approach and an ability to manage time. With coaching students will find that each section of the test has its own strategy with which to tackle it. For instance the integrated reasoning segment of it is not something that one can prepare for in a way to have a framework answer prepared for the actual test, i.e. one cannot have solved twenty questions in hopes of finding very similar one remodelled for the actual paper but rather would learn the patterns in the questions and will then be able to appropriate a strategy to solve them quickly and correctly. However, with the correct coaching a student will find that writing an impressive “Grade A” essay or solving 45 questions within the requisite time period allotted to it becomes infinitely easier because they have sharpened their ability to think quickly and present those thoughts exhibiting creativity, topical analysis, organisation of ideas and structure. This will ensure that they are dedicated the right amount of time to the type, length and quality of answer.
