Pet health insurance can be a lifesaver when your pet contracts an illness or is injured in an accident, as it will help you pay the frequently hugely expensive fees that vets charge to get your pet well again. Without the safety net that pet insurance cover can supply, you may be faced with the unfortunate choice of euthanising your pet rather than allowing it to continue suffering.

With this in mind, more and more people are determining that this relatively rare form of insurance is a prudent buy. But how can you make up your mind which of the many different policies on the market is right for you? Here are some things that you should definitely consider.

First off, is the policy suitable for your pet? Most policies have specific exceptions that could render them wholly unsuitable for your situation. For example, particular breeds of animal that are vulnerable to pricey conditions might be excepted from the policy. Another example is that most policies have an upper limit on the age of the pet to be insured. If you don't closely read the insurance policy for these limitations, you may well discover that any claim you have to make in the future is rejected.

Secondly, decide how much you want to spend on your policy. Clearly, in most cases, the less you pay the less features you will get. The other side of the coin to this is that if you spend more you might end up being charged for benefits you are not likely to require or ever claim for. Even so, insurance prices can vary widely even for products offering much the same set of benefits, so it's worth shopping around and using price comparison sites to get the sweetest deal. Always bear in mind though that product comparison sites don't ordinarily cover offers from every insurance company on the market, so it can often be worthwhile to do a bit of research of your own too.

Last, check around on the web for reviews posted by other customers. This will help you make up your mind whether the policy is worth taking out. There are two points to keep in mind here though. Dissatisfied people are more apt to post reviews than customers who are happy, so you could get a tilted view by only reading reviews posted by unhappy customers. Second, good reviews can from time to time have a stealthy motive: they may have been placed by the insurers themselves, for example, or they might even have been composed by an intermediary with the intent of pulling in a profit by convincing you to buy. Nonetheless, you can get a general idea of the measure of a product by reading a wide range of postings across many different sources.
