It can be scary at times walking into a cafe and seeing the long list of varieties on the coffee shop menu. What’s the dissimilarity between a latte and a cappuccino? How is frappe different from an iced coffee? Let’s try to enlighten you on some coffee drinks:

Americano: A single shot of espresso with approximately 7 ounces of hot water added to the blend. The name for this drink was a result from an insult to ‘uncouth’ Americans who weren’t able to drink full espressos.

Caffe Latte: A single shot of espresso in steamed milk. The proportion of milk to coffee should be approximately 3:1.

Cafe Macchiato: A shot of espresso with steamed milk. The proportion of coffee to milk is about 4:1.

Cappuccino Coffee: Generally equal portions of espresso, steamed milk, as well as frothed milk, often sprinkled with cinnamon or chipped chocolate on top. A few cafes add more milk, so that the consumer gets a bigger drink out of the deal.

Frappe: A big favorite of coffee lovers, particularly in the summer months. Originally a cold espresso, but nowadays it is being prepared putting 1-2 teaspoons of instant coffee with sugar, water as well as ice. The drink is placed in an elongated glass with ice, and milk if you like, turning into a big coffee milkshake.
