Although brownies are a tasty dessert that can be found almost everywhere from specialty stores to bakeries nowadays, brownies were once very hard to locate at the dawn of the 20th century. Certain places online have reports that brownies were first baked in the United States of America, but it wasn't until the early 1900s when brownies were made with the use of smaller cake pans. The pan brownie, one of America’s favorite baked snacks, was began in the United States, although no one is quite certain of exactly where. Most evidence suggests that it is likely the New England part of the Us at the early years of the 20th century. Although resembling a cake and prepared in a cake pan, it is classified as a bar cookie more so than a cake. There are thousands of recipes, both "cake" style and "fudge" style. Both kinds are perfect and right and a gourmet treat... and the best place to get them online, Ruth’s Brownie Kitchen prepares them both and offers you a choice of either or both style of brownies. It’s easy to understand that the brownie got its ”name” from its cocoa brown color. However as the case is with most foods, its true origin is shrouded in lore. The "bar cookie" is a quite recent entry to the food pantheon, making its initial appearance in books in the twilight of the twentieth century. Legend has it a pastry chef mistakenly added soft chocolate to a batch of biscuits...or that a cook chef was preparing a cake but didn’t have an adequate amount of flour. The most known legend, that appeared in John Mariani’s “The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink” and Betty Crocker's “Baking Classics” illustrates a tale of a housewife in Bangor, Maine, who was preparing a chocolate cake but somehow forgot to add the baking powder. When the cake came out of the over and didn’t rise properly, instead of tossing it out, she served and cut the flat ”cake” squares. And that is the theory that was given to the world from the cookbook published in Bangor circa 1912, six years after the the very first chocolate brownies recipe was published by Fannie Farmer, one of the United States’ most revered cookbook authors, in 1906 (the Bangor version was almost identical to the 1906 Fanny Farmer recipe).More than a few plenty references cite the original recipe as the 1897 Sears, Roebuck Catalogue,, but that was a recipe for a candy called molasses that was merely called . The moniker was given in honor to the elfin characters that had been featured in popular book. While the first recipes for brownies were published and different variations began to evolve around the first years of the 20th century, it wasn’t until the Roaring twenties for the brownie to emerge as the country’s absolute favorite baked chocolate treat, a position it , without rival still has and maintains today.
